A big thanks to benefactor and all around great guy, John Mitchell for purchasing the original oil painting. The money goes to the Livingston High School baseball program. The painting is based on a photo of the 1909 team. I'm still amazed when I think back on what life must have been like in the little farming communities at that time. I found out recently that Cafe Rolle was featured on Guy Fieri's show. This is very cool and also hilarious. I actually bought all of the ingredients and cooked the lentil salad. I was finally able to drop off the original painting after I made some adjustments and chef Rolle was very excited. He's going to hang the original in the restaurant. 11x14 prints are $25 and 16x20 prints are $40. They are matted to that size. I went into the Cedar Room here in Carmichael and showed the owner this painting. He loved it, bought the original and we've agreed to sell framed giclee prints on canvas to their customers or anyone else who wants one. Like the Bohol cafe, this is an 11x14 oil painting. We were at the roundabout at the base of the chocolate hills and I took a photo of this taxi. I mixed up a soft purple and painted it almost entirely upside down with my pallette knife, giving it a loose feeling.

As some of you may know, we recently bought a house in Citrus Heights (just north of Sacramento) and we've been in the process of moving large furniture and unpacking boxes. I went out painting with Naomi, Dean and Sophia and we decided to paint the beautiful views from behind Hazel avenue looking out towards Highway 50 going to South Lake Tahoe. Later the neighbors told me that this was a large Mormon Temple. You can see some of the colors changing in September and a path going down into the woods.

I just got off the phone today with my good friend and mentor, Suchitra Bhosle. She just returned from a long trip back to India and gave me a ring to say hello. She mentioned that she just did an interview with Southwest Art magazine, one of the premier mags in this country, because she was listed as an "artist to watch" in 2009. These publications came out last year over in the U.K., although the book on the right is from Finnish authors. In lieu of payment they donated money to a reputable relief organization. The great thing about painting is that you notice things, like the exact shape of the map of Thailand, that you wouldn't normally catch. Here you can see the skin colors added to the woman's body. The original sketch was done with water soluble pencil so it tends to run when you get it wet. This looks great but it can also muddy the colors so you have to be careful.

I started adding washes of color to the bodies, first with a light beige color. I liked how some of the colors ran from the previous washes so I'll try to leave those in the painting.

Yes, I have the photo to prove that I was hanging out with Kazakh paramedics who were polishing off a 12 pack of beer during a soccer match. Luckily, nobody was injured during the game. The ambulance title is pronounced, "Skoraya Pomosh." This painting was accepted into the 2008 National Small Oil Painting Exhibition at the Wichita Center for the Arts.
